Kids Attended Grade Level and State Scholastic Chess Championship

Many of our club kids have attended chess tourneys since the season began.  As the 2014-15 scholastic chess season winds down, quite a few of our kids also participated in two of the larger ones in the state – the Wisconsin Grade Level Championship held in Oconomowoc and the State Scholastic Chess Championship held in Oshkosh.

The Wisconsin Grade Level Championship was held on March 14th at the Olympia Resort and Conference Center, a new venue for this popular tourney.  Nine kids from the Mequon area participated in this event and took home quite a few trophies.  Kevin Wan, William Wang, and Abby Trop took 1st place team in the 2nd Grade division.  Amy Wang, Anish Kusukuntla, Maddie Weber, Nishanth Siva, and Steven Yang also won 1st place team in the 5th Grade division.  Individually, all 2nd graders placed and won trophies with Kevin Wan placing 2nd place, William Wang placing 4th, and Abby Trop placing 7th.

As for the 5th graders, four out of the five kids placed and won trophies with Amy Wang placing 4th place, Anish Kusukuntla winning 5th place, Maddie Weber 6th, and Nishanth Siva 7th.  Also participating in the tourney was Sam Weber playing in the 7th grade division.

The other big tourney of the season was the 2015 State Scholastic Chess Championship held at the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh Reeve Memorial Union on March 21st and 22nd.  A whopping 448 kids attended this event playing in six different divisions – Varsity 1, Varsity 2, Varsity 3, Junior Varsity, K8, and K5.  Four of our kids attended this event.  Chloe Wong played in the Junior Varsity division while Benjamin Martyn, Steven Yang, and Anish Kusukuntla all played in the K5 division.  All the kids did a great job and had solid wins.  Chloe did come away with the 2nd place trophy with 5.5 out of 6 pts.
